Here are some websites, blogs and online communities I’ve found to be good for independent animators.
M DOT STRANGE’S BLOG
This dude is a champion of independent animation and all round rad guy. I find his blog is well worth reading regularly. As well as updating on stuff he’s learning about independent animation + games production on his blog, he often posts great tutorials, useful insights and resources. I’ve learnt a lot from this blog.
A blog run by animators Patrick Smith and Bill Plympton. Posts often have lots of insightful information, art references and interesting animations. Tends to talk more about hand drawn 2D animation as that’s the style the two animators work in.
If you’re a beginner in digital animation and compositing the After Effects ‘Basic Training’ is a must. They also have loads of free AE tutorials.
Probably the best and biggest CGI animation community and forums. They have forums for all the larger computer graphics software which can be really useful.
Some good tutorials. A lot of them you have to pay for though which means I generally only use it if there’s no other choice.
AWN + CARTOON BREW
Animation website mostly centered around mainstream Hollywood content. I occasionally check these out to keep up with what’s happening in the broader scene. I rarely find anything worth looking at, but maybe you’ll find something useful.
